Booze! Apple Cider! Cinnamon Sticks! Helloooo Fall!
If you can’t tell – I am very much in love with this cocktail. Everything about it is fun.
It’s a given that anything with booze is fun, right? Ok, well maybe not anything – as my mind flashes back to poor college days and cheap bottles of vodka. But this! This is exceptionally fun because it’s a glass of all things fall. And it’s absolutely delicious and totally one of those drinks that are a little deadly because you kind of forget there is alcohol in it.
You do you though, I ain’t here to stop you.
Back in August we spent a weekend with friends at an amazing cabin in the mountains of Tennessee. We weren’t really sure what we were getting into since the cabin was literally tucked away far from a lot of civilization, so we took it upon ourselves to stock up on supplies before heading up there in case there wasn’t much around. (Note: there WASN’T much around, so it was good we did.) We decided the cocktail of choice for the weekend was going to be moscow mules – and being overambitious and feeling excited – we also decided to buy all the ginger beer in the world. ALL of it. At the end of the weekend, we somehow still had close to 20 cans of ginger beer left over. WHY?!
So now that ginger beer has officially taken over the bottom shelf of our fridge, I’ve been trying to figure out different ways to use it – not just in moscow mule form. Suggestions? Please! Throw them my way. I think I’m going to try a marinade for fish tacos or some kind of protein – reports back on that soon. But, the most obvious thing to do, of course, was to make some type of cocktail.
Inspired by the cooling temps, I wanted to use that ginger beer and make something autumn-y, fun to sip on, easy to drink. That last one is KEY – especially for someone like me, who 8/10 times would choose wine or beer because I don’t want to taste the rum or vodka in my drink (unless it’s a marg or mojito…). I envisioned myself sippin’ on something cozied up in a blanket on the couch, or around a fire pit, or disguised in a thermos at a football game (whaaaat?!) – and the only thing that kept coming to mind was apple cider!
One of my favorite things about this time of year is apple cider. I’m driving back to Ohio today and can’t wait to get my hands on cider from Patterson’s Fruit Farm – if you ever find yourself driving through the great town of Chesterland during the fall months – make a stop at Patterson’s for their cider, it is AMAZING. And it will soon be all mine.
Vodka is the hard liquor of choice, but I think this drink would totally work with rum as well – pick your poison, either way you won’t be able to taste when it’s mixed up with these other delicious ingredients. Oh and cinnamon sticks is key! Even though it really is there to just make the drink look fall festive, it also adds a little bit of spice to balance out the sweetness. Ok who am I kidding, it’s really just there to look pretty. I couldn’t be happier with how this turned out- it’s basically 3 ingredients, takes 5 minutes, and tastes exactly how I wanted it to- like fall! How amazing is that?
Off to Ohio I go – hoping to snag an old school thermos from the 90s and find a football game to tailgate at this weekend. Count you in?
- 12 ounce ginger beer
- 1½ cup apple cider
- 6 ounces vodka (=2 shots per glass), more or less to taste
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 apple, diced
- Cinnamon sticks (optional, but worth it)
- Stir together the ginger beer, apple cider, vodka, and ground cinnamon. Pour into glasses, and serve over ice. Add in a couple diced apples into each glass and garnish with cinnamon stick!
