Grilled Asian Chicken Wings with Shishito Peppers

Ready or not, football season is here!

I won’t be cliché and talk about how quickly time has flown by (but seriously, hasn’t it?!) – and instead, I’ll celebrate the beauty of all the reasons why football season rocks!

It’s because of the food.

It’s always because of the food though.

Grilled Asian Chicken Wings with Shishito PeppersAnd with the official start of football season around the corner, it’s time to tailgate! In celebration, I’ve joined a group of bloggers from all over the country — all of whom are big football fans! — to bring you 64 tailgating recipe ideas for a terrific football party.

Y’all, this roundup features some killer recipes. I think we should make it a mission to try them all, don’t you? (Oh and best part is that we’ll be bringing you 2 more round-ups throughout the season!)

So let’s talk football for a second or two. Readdddy, break.

Grilled Asian Chicken Wings with Shishito PeppersAlthough my current residence is in Charlotte, I am, have been, and forever will be, a Cleveland Browns fan. A Cleveland-EVERYTHING fan to be exact, but you probably saw that one coming.

As I’m sure you’ve heard a thousand and one times, us Clevelanders have been through it all.

We’ve overused the phrase, “there’s always next year.” We cringe, we cry, we celebrate. But most of all? We are truly ride or die fans.

I don’t care what anyone says about us (well, what can you really say now after our Cavs Championship?) – if you’ve ever met a Cleveland fan, you know how dedicated we are to our teams and our city.

Grilled Asian Chicken Wings with Shishito PeppersAnd one of the things us Clevelanders know how to do best? Tailgate. If you’ve ever experienced a morning in the Muni lot before a Browns game, then you know what I’m talking about. And if you haven’t, wellllll – you probably should add it to your sports bucket list.

It doesn’t matter if it’s -25 degrees out, or we’re playing an undefeated team with slim chances of winning  — fans will start trickling in at wee hours of the morning, preparing for the day ahead. One can say, it’s kind of a big deal.

So this one is for y’all – my true ride or die fans who are getting their menus (and livers) ready for this upcoming football season – there’s always this year!

Grilled Asian Chicken Wings with Shishito Peppers
Prep time
Cook time
Total time
Serves: 4-6
For the vinaigrette:
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • 2 teaspoons lime zest
  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • Salt and pepper
For the chicken wings:
  • 2-3 pounds chicken wings, mix of flats and drumettes
  • 2 cups shishito peppers
  • 1½ cups shishito peppers
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 fresno chili, or jalapeño, thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup fresh herbs (basil, cilantro, parsley, mint - you can use any), chopped
  • Salt and pepper
  • ¼ cup toasted sesame seeds
For the vinaigrette:
  1. In a large bowl, combine the garlic, lime juice, and lime zest. Season with salt and pepper and let sit for 5-10 minutes. Whisk in the toasted soy sauce, olive oil, toasted sesame oil, and honey. (Vinaigrette can me made ahead, covered, and stored in the fridge if desired!)
For the wings:
  1. Season chicken wings with salt and pepper, then add the wings to a large resealable plastic bag, or shallow dish (with a lid), and add 1 cup of the vinaigrette. Seal bag/dish, and toss wings to coat. Chill in the fridge at least 2 hours, and up to 24 hours.
  2. When ready to cook - heat your grill to medium heat. Add the chicken to the grill and cook, turning occasionally, until wings are cooked through and slightly charred, about 10-12 minutes. Transfer wings to a plate. Clean off the grill, but keep the heat on medium.
  3. Next, in a medium bowl, toss the shishito peppers with the olive oil. Season with salt and pepper, and grill the peppers until blistered, about 3-4 minutes. Transfer to the plate with the wings on it.
  4. Drizzle the remaining vinaigrette over top of the peppers and wings. Top with the slices of fresno chili, chopped herbs, and sesame seeds!

  1. Looks like a great round up of recipes, Michelle! I’m not a football fan, but I do love all of the food that goes along with this time of year, especially wings….well, I love wings any time really, lol 😀 Love that you’ve added peppers to the mix. Big Fan! I know my hubby would really enjoy these too! Pinned!

  2. I’m going to need to bookmark this for tailgating and football games! Flo and I LOVE LOVE LOVE chicken wings and get them everywhere. Nothing like eating with my hands like a cave woman. Forwarding him this recipe now! Yummmmm.

  3. I fell in love with these peppers myself this year (it’s so much fun not knowing if you’re going to get a hot one!) and I can’t say no to wings. Looks like a game day must make!

Browns fan, huh? I guess we’ll see what happens next Sunday! E-A-G-L-E-S Eagles! 😉
